Remembering Bob Grigg: 1932 – 2016
“Losing Bob was like seeing a library burn down.”
Bob Grigg lived in Colebrook for the majority of his life. He attended the Lyndon Institute in Lyndon, Vermont and Clark University in Worcester, Massachusetts. He served in the Navy during the Korean conflict primarily on the submarine USS Bowfin as a Signalman. His career was as a cartographer working at Hammond Maps in New Jersey where one of his achievements was his work on the globe still displayed at the former Daily News building in New York City. He volunteered extensively throughout his life as a firefighter for the Winsted Fire Department, Curator for the Colebrook Historical Society, on the Board of Directors for the Colebrook Land Conservancy and Town Historian for the Town of Colebrook. His passion was history and he wrote a weekly article “Historic Bytes” for the Winsted Journal.
He participated in area archeological digs, was official photographer for numerous town events and was a major component to the Colebrook Consolidated School “Rock School Day” where schoolchildren would spend the day at the one-room Rock School learning how children from the past learned at school.
Because of his extensive help in assisting the Chinese equivalent of Public Television for research of 1800’s Chinese Yale student Fun Tang (who died in Colebrook and was buried here) he was invited to and visited China as their official guest.
Bob was a genuine treasure to our community, eager to help and always a reliable source of information, historic data and amusing anecdotes. He was loved and will be missed by many.

CHS Opens 2010 Season Honoring Bob Grigg
Many crowded into the standing-room-only (sweltering hot) Gathering Room at the Old Seymour Inn for Bob’s special day where he was honored by comments from Jan Rathbun, Rick Tillitson, Robert MacNeil, and was awarded a plaque of recognition of the Town’s appreciation of his incredible contributions from First Selectman, Tom McKeon.
Fittingly, the Special 2010 Summer exhibit features the photography of Bob Grigg and the artwork of Bob’s Dad, Paul Grigg.
